Planet's friend: This Boat Harbour home won the environmentally sustainable development for W & R McBean.

High quality construction and environmental principles worked together to win a special award for W & R McBean at last night's MBA excellence awards.

McBean won the judges' award in the housing section category for environmentally sustainable development with a Boat Harbour residence of the edge of a national park.

The judges said features included prefabricated steel construction to minimise disruption of the sloping site.

Thermal mass was achieved through tiled decks, with pre-weathered cedar shingles to reduce maintenance.

Other environmental aspects included ceiling fans, twin water tanks and a solar hot water system.
